Robux, Minecoins and your M-PESA: what parents should set up first

Once M-PESA Xpress billing is set up on a device, buying costs one tap and an M-PESA PIN. If a child knows the PIN, there is nothing else standing between them and your balance. The controls worth setting are in Google Play, not in the game.

The three things to do first

  1. Turn on authentication for purchases in the Play Store settings, so every purchase requires a password or fingerprint, not just the M-PESA PIN.
  2. Do not share the M-PESA PIN. It is the last gate and it is also the gate to everything else in your M-PESA.
  3. Check which accounts are signed in on the device, both the Google account and the game account.

What cannot be undone

In-game currency sent to the wrong account. Robux and Minecoins land on whichever account was signed in. No one can move them.

Money sent to a reseller. If a code never arrives, you have an M-PESA code and a complaint, not a refund button.

The one thing that can be undone is a Google Play app or game purchase, within 48 hours, once per item.

The scam shape to teach them

Free or very cheap in-game currency, offered by someone in a chat, in exchange for a password or a small payment first. That is the pattern, and it is aimed squarely at children. The rule is simple enough for a ten-year-old: nobody legitimate ever needs your password, and you never send money to get money.

In-game currency purchases are generally not reversible. Google Play allows refunds on apps and games within 48 hours, but in-app currency is a different thing. Turn on purchase authentication to stop it recurring.
