Game gift cards in Kenya, and what to check before you pay

A gift card is a code you buy from a shop and redeem on the game’s own site. The market in Kenya is mostly small resellers selling codes over WhatsApp and email for M-PESA. Some are ordinary businesses. Some are not, and the games involved are played by children, which is exactly why the scams cluster here.

How the legitimate version works

  1. You pay a shop in shillings.
  2. They send you a code, usually by email or WhatsApp.
  3. You redeem the code on the game’s own website, for Roblox at roblox.com/redeem.
  4. The credit lands on your account and you spend it in the game.

What goes wrong

The code never arrives. You paid a number, the number went quiet.

The code is already redeemed. Codes are resold, or sold twice.

The price is far above conversion, which is legal but worth knowing before you agree.

The shop is impersonating a real one. A near-identical name and a different number is the oldest trick in the Kenyan payments book, and we see it on paybills every week.

Why there are no numbers on this page

We publish 307 verified paybills on this site and we check every one against its owner before it goes up. We have verified none of the game reseller numbers, and we are not going to put an unchecked number in front of a reader who may be a child with their parent’s phone. If you want the route we can stand behind, it is the Google Play one.

If you are going to use a reseller anyway

  1. Do it with an adult if you are not one.
  2. Check the M-PESA confirmation SMS names the business you think you are paying, before you send anything else.
  3. Convert the dollar price first so you know what margin you are accepting.
  4. Keep the M-PESA code. It is the only thing that makes a complaint possible.
  5. Redeem the code yourself on the official site. Never hand your Roblox or Microsoft password to a seller.

Why will you not list the reseller paybills?

Because we have not checked them, and this is a market aimed at children. Every number on paybillke is verified against its owner first. These are not.

Google Play M-PESA Xpress billing on Android, which Safaricom documents itself. No third party holds your money at any point.

Stop. A gift card is redeemed by you, on Roblox’s own site. Nobody legitimate needs your password.
