Boostika by Equity: The Overdraft That Rivals Fuliza

By Arnold Ochieng · Equity Bank Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Equity Bank Kenya.

Boostika is Equity's overdraft, its answer to Fuliza. When your Equity balance cannot cover a payment, Boostika lets you overdraw up to KES 100,000 to complete shopping, payments, transfers or airtime, and you repay within 30 days. You can draw multiple times as long as the unpaid balance stays within your limit.

How it works

When you are short during a transaction on the Equity app, Equitel or *247#, a Boostika prompt shows your limit and the amount needed to complete. You accept, the payment goes through, and the overdraft is repaid from money that next comes into your account, within 30 days.

What it costs (verified)

The effective cost of credit is 8.5% for the month. On the maximum KES 100,000, that is KES 8,500, made up of a 5% processing fee (KES 5,000), 1.5% monthly interest (KES 1,500), 1% loan insurance (KES 1,000) and 20% excise duty on the processing fee (KES 1,000).

Eligibility and access

Your account must have been active for at least six months, and your limit sits between KES 100 and KES 100,000 based on how you run your account. Access Boostika on the Equity app, Equitel or by dialling *247#.

Boostika vs Fuliza

Both cover a shortfall so a payment does not fail. Fuliza works on M-PESA, Boostika works on your Equity account across the app, Equitel and *247#, and goes up to KES 100,000. Use whichever sits on the account you are paying from, and clear it quickly, since the cost is for the month.
