Absa insurance, through bancassurance

By Arnold Ochieng · Absa Bank Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Absa Bank Kenya.

Absa sells insurance through bancassurance, which means Absa arranges cover underwritten by insurers rather than carrying the risk itself. The range covers car, house, medical and travel, plus personal accident, funeral and credit life.

Credit life is the one worth understanding

Credit life insurance clears your loan if you die or become permanently disabled. It is usually compulsory on a mortgage and common on personal loans, and it is often presented as a line item in the paperwork rather than explained.

It is worth understanding properly, because it is the difference between your family inheriting a house and inheriting a debt secured on that house. Ask three things: what it costs, whether the premium is added to the loan or paid separately, and whether you are obliged to buy Absa's or may bring cover of your own. The answer to the third is sometimes yes, and shopping it can save money.

What bancassurance means for you

Absa is the intermediary, not the underwriter. Practically, that means claims are assessed by the insurer, so ask who underwrites the policy before you buy, and check that insurer's own reputation for paying claims. The convenience is real, since the cover sits alongside your banking and the premium can come off your account. The convenience is not a reason to skip comparing the price against buying direct.

Car insurance

If you have financed a vehicle through Absa vehicle finance, comprehensive cover is normally required for the life of the facility with Absa noted as an interested party. Our car insurance guide covers what comprehensive includes, what excess means in practice, and how valuation works at claim time.

Medical cover

Private medical cover in Kenya sits on top of SHA, not instead of it. Before buying, check the inpatient and outpatient limits separately, the waiting periods for pre-existing conditions and maternity, and whether the hospitals you actually use are on the panel. Our medical cover comparison sets the main Kenyan schemes against each other.

Last expense and personal accident

Funeral or last expense cover pays out quickly to meet immediate costs, which is its whole point: the money arrives in days rather than after an estate is settled. Personal accident covers injury or death from accidents specifically, which is narrower than life cover and priced accordingly. Read what counts as an accident before assuming a given event is covered. Timiza also carries personal accident and last expense cover inside the wallet, which may be simpler if you are not an Absa bank customer.
