Absa accounts and how to open one

Absa's flagship personal account is Absa One, a current account you can open online in minutes. There is also Absa Digital Savings for saving, and Absa One Biashara, a sole-proprietor business account with no monthly fees and card acceptance through Mobi Tap.

Absa One Biashara is the interesting one

If you run a small business, this is the account worth looking at closely, for two reasons.

No monthly fees on a business account is unusual in Kenya, where maintenance charges quietly eat a few hundred shillings a month whether you transact or not.

Mobi Tap turns the phone in your pocket into a card terminal, so you can accept card payments without renting a POS machine. For a business that currently turns away card customers or sends them to an ATM, that is a real revenue difference rather than a convenience. It sits alongside, not instead of, an M-PESA till, and our till hub covers how the two compare for collection.

What you need to open one

  1. Your National ID or passport.
  2. Your KRA PIN.
  3. For some accounts, proof of income or address.
  4. For Absa One Biashara, your business registration documents.

Register for Hello Money while you are at it

Unlike some banks, Absa lets you self-register for *224# afterwards without a branch visit, as long as you have your debit card. So this is less urgent than it is elsewhere. It is still worth doing on day one rather than the first time you need to move money in a hurry.

What to confirm before choosing

Absa keeps these on its rates and fees page rather than on the product pages, and they are the numbers that decide which account suits you:

  • The minimum opening balance and the minimum operating balance, which are often different.
  • The monthly maintenance fee, and whether it is waived above a balance.
  • The debit card issue and annual fee.
  • Whether SMS alerts are bundled or charged monthly.
  • The number of free ATM withdrawals, and what an out-of-network withdrawal costs.

Funding it
