KPLC — Kenya Power and Lighting Company — has been one of the highest-volume M-Pesa paybills since 2009. Most Kenyans pay their electricity bill or buy prepaid tokens via paybill 888880 several times a month. The mechanics are straightforward once you know which account-number format to use.

Postpaid customers

If you receive a monthly KPLC bill (the printed or emailed one), you're a postpaid customer.

  1. On your phone, dial *334# or open the M-Pesa app.
  2. Select Lipa na M-Pesa, then Pay Bill.
  3. Enter Business Number: 888880.
  4. Enter Account: your KPLC account number (printed on the bill, usually starts with a digit, no spaces).
  5. Enter the amount due (or partial — KPLC accepts partial payments).
  6. Enter your M-Pesa PIN. Confirm.

You'll receive an M-Pesa SMS confirmation with a transaction code. KPLC's system clears your bill within 1-15 minutes typically, though the system can take longer at month-end peaks.

Prepaid (token) customers

If you have a prepaid meter, the paybill is the same — 888880 — but the account format is different. Use your 11-digit prepaid meter number (printed on the meter itself, not your bill).

  1. Lipa na M-Pesa → Pay Bill → Business Number 888880.
  2. Account: your 11-digit prepaid meter number.
  3. Enter amount in KES (minimum KES 50).
  4. Enter PIN, confirm.
  5. You'll receive two SMS messages: the M-Pesa confirmation and a separate KPLC token SMS containing the 20-digit token. Type the token into your meter to top up.

What it costs

KPLC payments are standard M-Pesa Paybill fees — no special markup or surcharge. Excise duty (15%) is bundled into the displayed fee.

Lipa Mdogo Mdogo (flexible-pay tokens)

Lipa Mdogo Mdogo is KPLC's flexible payment plan for prepaid meters — buy tokens daily or weekly in small amounts rather than larger top-ups. The same paybill (888880) is used; the difference is plan enrollment with KPLC, not a different number.

Eligibility requires registering at a KPLC office or via their customer-portal. Once enrolled, your meter accepts smaller daily token denominations. Useful for households on irregular income.

Five common KPLC payment issues

  1. Wrong account number. Money goes to KPLC but isn't allocated to your account. Call KPLC with the M-Pesa transaction code; reallocation takes 1-3 working days.
  2. Used postpaid account number on a prepaid meter. Same fix — call KPLC with the transaction code.
  3. Wrong meter number on prepaid. Tokens get generated for the wrong meter. KPLC can re-issue if you call within 24 hours.
  4. Token doesn't fit (“invalid token” on the meter). Usually means you bought tokens for a different meter than the one in front of you. Call KPLC.
  5. Bill cleared but no SMS received. Sometimes happens. Check your bill balance via KPLC USSD 977*977# or the KPLC app.
