KPLC paybill not working? Token and postpaid fixes (2026)

KPLC runs two separate paybills for two separate billing systems. Prepaid customers pay 888880 with their 11-digit meter number; postpaid customers pay 888888 with their account number. The two systems do not talk to each other in real time, so a payment to the wrong paybill parks in a KPLC holding account until manually re-routed. This guide covers the prepaid/postpaid confusion that catches most users, the token not arriving issue (the #1 prepaid complaint), the postpaid bill update lag, meter-number format errors, the scam paybills circulating, and the exact escalation steps.

Which KPLC paybill do I use?

  • Prepaid meter (you buy tokens): paybill 888880, account = your 11-digit prepaid meter number. Token arrives by SMS within 60 seconds.
  • Postpaid account (you receive a monthly bill): paybill 888888, account = your 10-digit postpaid account number from the bill. Bill updates in the KPLC system within 24 hours.

If you are unsure which type you have: check your last bill or invoice. Postpaid customers receive a monthly invoice with usage details. Prepaid customers buy tokens on demand and have an LCD on the meter showing remaining units. Most newer connections in Kenya are prepaid by default; older homes may still be postpaid.

Three checks before you assume the payment failed

  1. Did the M-PESA SMS arrive with a 10-character code? If yes (e.g. RG7HX9BC2K), the payment is accepted by Safaricom. The issue is either (a) a delivery delay on the KPLC side, or (b) the meter / account number was wrong.
  2. Does the SMS recipient name match the paybill? Should read "KENYA POWER" for 888888 or "KENYA POWER (PREPAID)" for 888880. Any other name and you paid the wrong paybill.
  3. Did you use the right paybill for your meter type? 888880 prepaid, 888888 postpaid. The wrong combination is the biggest cause of "I paid but nothing happened" complaints.

Prepaid: token not arriving

Tokens normally arrive by SMS within 60 seconds, sometimes up to 5 minutes during peak load (Friday evenings, end of month, after national outages). If no token after 10 minutes:

  1. Verify the M-PESA SMS recipient. Should read "KENYA POWER (PREPAID)". If just "KENYA POWER" without (PREPAID), you paid the postpaid paybill 888888 by mistake. Call 95551 to re-route.
  2. Verify the meter number in the SMS. Match it against the number on your meter face. Most prepaid meters are 11 digits.
  3. Check phone SMS coverage. If your phone has a weak signal or has received no SMS for hours, the token may be queued. Move to better coverage and wait.
  4. Text the M-PESA transaction code to 95551. KPLC resends the token within minutes if the payment is on file. This is the standard token resend route.
  5. Dial *977# and choose "Request token resend". Same as the SMS route, some users find the USSD faster.
  6. If still no token after 30 minutes: call 95551 or tweet @KenyaPower_Care with your M-PESA code and meter number. They can verify and re-issue on the spot.

Token arrived but meter rejects it as invalid

  1. Triple-check the 20-digit token. Common misreads: 0 vs O, 1 vs I, 5 vs S, 8 vs B. The token in the SMS uses only digits, no letters; if your meter accepts the alphanumeric format, type carefully.
  2. Cycle power on the meter. Switch off at the main, wait 30 seconds, switch on. Retry the token entry.
  3. Verify the meter number in the M-PESA SMS matches your physical meter. If the SMS lists a different meter number, you paid for someone else's meter; call 95551 to re-issue.

Postpaid: bill not updating

Postpaid bills can take up to 24 hours to reflect in the KPLC account portal, even though the M-PESA payment goes through immediately. Outside business hours and on weekends, allow up to 48 hours. The KPLC settlement process for postpaid is batched, not real-time.

If your bill is still showing unpaid after 48 hours:

  1. Call 95551 with the M-PESA transaction code, your account number, and the amount.
  2. Tweet @KenyaPower_Care for a faster response during business hours.
  3. Email kpcsupport@kplc.co.ke with a screenshot of the M-PESA SMS.

Meter or account number format errors

KPLC paybills accept only plain digits in the account field. Common mistakes:

  • Hyphens or spaces in the meter number: "10-12345-6789" or "1012345 6789". Strip everything to plain digits.
  • Letters on older meter labels: "MK 12345678" should be entered as just "12345678".
  • Account number on the wrong paybill type: postpaid account number on the prepaid paybill 888880 or vice versa. Use the matching paybill for your meter type.
  • Leading zeros stripped: some users assume leading zeros are optional. They are not. Enter the number exactly as printed on the meter or bill.

Scam paybills targeting KPLC customers

KPLC has two of the most-searched paybills in Kenya, which makes them prime targets for look-alike scams. The legitimate paybills are 888880 (prepaid) and 888888 (postpaid). Variants circulating:

  • 888881, 888882, 888883: trailing-digit variants, not KPLC
  • 888008, 888080: digits reordered
  • 888 880 vs 888 888: scammers often mix the two paybills in WhatsApp messages claiming "KPLC changed paybill"; KPLC has not changed either paybill in years
  • "New KPLC paybill: XXXXXX" SMS or social media posts: always fake. Verify on kplc.co.ke or @KenyaPower_Care before paying any number you have not used before.

Confirm 888880 or 888888 on kplc.co.ke or our KPLC paybill page before paying. If the SMS recipient is not "KENYA POWER" or "KENYA POWER (PREPAID)", you paid wrong, reverse within 7 days.

Reversing a wrong KPLC payment

If you paid the wrong paybill type (prepaid vs postpaid), it is faster to call 95551 and ask for a manual re-route than to wait for a Safaricom reversal. KPLC can re-route within 24 hours; Safaricom reversals take 2 to 7 business days.

If KPLC cannot resolve, run the Safaricom reversal:

  1. Dial *234# from your Safaricom line.
  2. Choose My Account, then Reversal.
  3. Key in the M-PESA transaction code.
  4. Confirm. Safaricom contacts KPLC and requests release.
  5. Resolution: 2 to 7 business days.

How to escalate to KPLC

FAQ

What are the official KPLC paybills in Kenya?

KPLC has two official paybills depending on your meter type. For prepaid token purchases, use 888880, with your prepaid meter number as the account. For postpaid bills, use 888888, with your postpaid account number as the account. Using the wrong paybill for your meter type is the single biggest cause of "KPLC payment not working" complaints.

I paid 888880 but I have not received my prepaid token. What now?

KPLC tokens normally arrive by SMS within 60 seconds, sometimes up to 5 minutes during peak load. If no SMS after 10 minutes, check three things: (1) Was your meter number entered correctly? Most prepaid meters are 11 digits, no spaces. (2) Did you pay 888880 (prepaid) or 888888 (postpaid)? They are different. (3) Is your phone receiving SMS at all, network coverage problem. Send the M-PESA transaction code via SMS to 95551 to request a token resend.

KPLC token came but my meter rejects it as "invalid". Why?

Three possibilities. (1) You typed the 20-digit token wrong. Triple-check, the token is case-sensitive and a single misread digit fails the whole entry. (2) The token was issued for a different meter, you used the wrong meter number when paying. Check the meter number in the SMS. (3) The meter firmware is out of sync. Cycle power on the meter (switch off at the main, wait 30 seconds, switch back on), retry the token. If still rejected, the token was already used; KPLC can re-issue against the same M-PESA code.

My KPLC postpaid bill still shows unpaid after I paid 888888. What now?

Postpaid bills can take up to 24 hours to reflect in the KPLC account portal, even though the M-PESA payment goes through immediately. Outside business hours and on weekends, allow up to 48 hours. The M-PESA SMS is your proof. If the bill is still showing unpaid after 48 hours, call 95551 or tweet @KenyaPower_Care with the M-PESA transaction code and your account number.

My meter number has a hyphen or letter. The system rejects it. What do I do?

KPLC paybills accept only plain digits in the account field. A meter number written as "10-12345-6" or "MK12345678" must be cleaned to just the digits: 10123456 or 12345678. Most prepaid meters in Kenya have an 11-digit number; postpaid accounts are typically 10 digits. Check your latest bill or the meter face for the exact number.

KPLC M-PESA says "account number error". What does it mean?

The meter or account number you entered does not match a KPLC record. Common causes: (1) typed wrong, (2) you used a postpaid account number on the prepaid paybill 888880 or vice versa, (3) the meter was recently replaced and the old number deactivated. Verify the meter number off the meter face or the latest bill, confirm whether your meter is prepaid or postpaid, retry the matching paybill.

I paid the wrong KPLC paybill (888888 instead of 888880 or vice versa). Can it be fixed?

Yes. Call KPLC on 95551 or tweet @KenyaPower_Care with your M-PESA transaction code and meter number. KPLC can manually re-route between the prepaid and postpaid systems within 24 hours. Faster than waiting for a Safaricom reversal, which can take 2 to 7 days.

Why does the same paybill not work for both prepaid and postpaid?

Prepaid and postpaid are two separate billing systems on the KPLC side, with different settlement and audit flows. Prepaid (888880) settles into the prepaid tokens float; postpaid (888888) settles into accounts receivable for monthly billing. The M-PESA paybill code routes the payment to the correct internal system; using the wrong one parks your money in a holding account until manually re-routed.

How do I check my KPLC account or meter balance?

For postpaid bills: dial *977# from any phone or check the My Power app. For prepaid meter balance: read it directly off the meter LCD, or dial *977# and choose "Prepaid balance" if your phone is registered with KPLC. Last 5 token purchases are also stored in the meter, accessible via the meter button sequence on most models.

Can I reverse a wrong KPLC payment?

Yes within 7 days. Forward the M-PESA confirmation SMS to 456, or dial *456# from your Safaricom line and choose Reversal, then enter the M-PESA transaction code. KPLC usually agrees to release for clear errors, but it is faster to call 95551 and ask for a manual re-route (especially for prepaid-postpaid mix-ups) than to wait for the Safaricom reversal process.
