Nairobi Expressway toll rates, stations and how to pay (2026)

The Nairobi Expressway is a 27.1 km toll road running along the Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way corridor, connecting Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Westlands. It is operated by Moja Expressway Company. You pay by distance, so what you owe depends on where you get on and where you get off, not a flat fee.

The full rate table, station by station

These are the gazetted base fares for a Class 3 vehicle, an ordinary saloon car, excluding VAT. Read across from your entry station to your exit station. The fare is the same in either direction.

What the vehicle classes mean

The Expressway prices by vehicle size. The table above is Class 3, the ordinary car. Bigger vehicles pay more, calculated as gazetted multipliers on the Class 3 base.

• Class 3, light two-axle: saloon cars and 4WDs up to nine seats, pickups and vans up to 1.5 tonnes. This is the base rate above.
• Class 4, larger two-axle: minibus matatus up to 23 passengers, light and medium trucks.
• Class 5, heavy, fewer than four axles: heavy rigid trucks, and buses from 24 to 59 passengers.
• Class 6, four or more axles: articulated trucks.
• Classes 1 and 2 (motorbikes and three-wheelers) are not permitted on the Expressway.

How to pay the toll

1. ETC, the tag. Apply for an ETC account and have an On-Board Unit fitted at a service centre. After that you drive through the ETC lane without stopping and the toll is deducted from your prepaid balance. Fastest option, and the only one with discount packages.
2. MTC card. A tap-and-go prepaid card. Apply at a service centre, collect it, load it, and tap at the manual lane.
3. Mobile money. No account needed. Press the voucher button at the entry station, then pay with M-PESA using that voucher code at the exit.
4. Cash. Press the voucher button at entry, then pay in cash at the exit.

How to top up your ETC or MTC account

• Nairobi Expressway app (App Store and Google Play): sign in, top up, check balance and statements.
• USSD *819#: register, top up, check balance and statement. Stanbic Bank members use *208#.
• Website customer portal at customer.nairobiexpressway.ke: apply, top up, check balance and statements.
• Bank apps: the Stanbic and Standard Chartered apps top up for their own customers; the Loop Go app can top up any ETC or MTC account, including someone else's.
• Cash at toll stations and service centres.

Your balance also shows on the screen at the exit toll station as you pass, along with your vehicle details and the toll charged. The minimum ETC balance to keep the tag working is 490 toll points.

The rules on the Expressway

• The speed limit is 80 km/h, or lower where signs say so.
• No dropping or picking passengers along the Expressway.
• No parking, except when your vehicle has genuinely broken down.
• No reversing and no U-turns.
• Do not use the emergency lane except in an actual emergency.
• Littering attracts a fine.
