Dubai is the number one overseas destination for Kenyan travellers, for shopping, business, sourcing, holidays and stopovers. And nothing spoils the first hour of the trip like landing to a roaming bill or hunting for an airport SIM counter at Dubai International. The fix is simple: get a Dubai eSIM before you fly, pay for it with M-PESA in shillings, and walk out of DXB already online. Prices start at $4.05 for 1GB across seven days.

The problem with roaming and airport SIMs

Leave your Safaricom or Airtel line on roaming in the UAE and data adds up fast, often far more than the trip needs. Even the cheaper daily-roaming bundles work out expensive across a five-day trip compared with a fixed eSIM plan. Buying a local UAE SIM at DXB means a counter, an Emirates ID or passport check, and time you would rather spend getting to your hotel. An eSIM avoids both. You install it at home, it activates when you land, and your Kenyan number stays on for M-PESA and bank texts.

Why buying with M-PESA changes things

Here is where a Kenyan brand beats the global apps. Most eSIM sellers make you pay with an international card in dollars, which many Kenyan travellers either do not have or find blocked for foreign online payments. Kwetu lets you pay with M-PESA, in shillings, over a one-tap STK Push. You buy your Dubai data the same way you pay for everything else at home, before you have even left for the airport. For a typical Kenyan Dubai holiday (5 to 7 days, maps, WhatsApp, some social media, light streaming) the 30d/5GB plan at $13.50 is the sweet spot. Business travellers on back-to-back meetings often prefer the 3GB/day plans so they cannot run out mid-conference.

How to set up your Dubai eSIM

  1. Choose a UAE plan sized to your trip. A week of maps, messaging, ride-hailing and social use is comfortable on a mid-size data plan.
  2. Pay with M-PESA at checkout. The price shows in KES once you set your Kwetu account currency to KES.
  3. Install the QR code before you fly, while on home WiFi. Open Settings, choose Add eSIM, scan.
  4. Land in Dubai and your data switches on automatically at DXB. Your Kwetu eSIM connects to Etisalat or du, whichever is stronger.
  5. Keep your Safaricom SIM in the phone for M-PESA and calls home. Turn data roaming off on the Safaricom profile so you are not billed for roaming data.

A quick note on cost thinking

Compare like for like. A Safaricom roaming day-pass times the number of days you are away, versus a single eSIM plan bought once in shillings. For most Dubai trips the eSIM is dramatically cheaper, and you avoid the bill-shock risk entirely because you pay a fixed amount up front. Check the live plan price at checkout, since data plans are updated regularly.

Keeping M-PESA working in Dubai

Your M-PESA keeps working abroad through your Safaricom number, so you can still send and receive money at home while you travel. The eSIM handles your Dubai data, your Safaricom SIM handles M-PESA and calls. You are not choosing between them, you are running both. Turn off data roaming on the Safaricom profile in phone settings to make sure you are only using data through the Kwetu eSIM.

Also useful for a Dubai trip

  • Careem and Uber both work with a Kenyan card. Save the payment method before you fly.
  • Metro Nol card is cheaper than daily ride-hailing. Buy at any Metro station.
  • Dubai has excellent public WiFi in malls, cafes and the Metro. Your eSIM data is for the gaps between them.
  • Dress code is loose in tourist areas but conservative near mosques and government buildings.

Frequently asked

Can I pay for a Dubai eSIM with M-PESA?

Yes. Kwetu takes M-PESA in KES at checkout via STK Push, so you do not need an international card. Set your Kwetu account currency to KES to expose the M-PESA option.

How much data do I need for a week in Dubai?

For maps, WhatsApp, ride-hailing (Careem, Uber), social media and light streaming, 3GB across seven days is comfortable. Heavy streamers or people making a lot of video calls should size up to a 5GB or 10GB plan.

Will my M-PESA work while I am in Dubai?

Yes, through your normal Safaricom number. M-PESA runs on the SIM registered to your ID, not on the travel eSIM. Keep your Safaricom SIM in the phone alongside the Kwetu eSIM.

Is an eSIM cheaper than Safaricom roaming in the UAE?

For almost all trips, yes. A UAE eSIM plan is a single fixed cost bought up front (from $4.05 for a week), while Safaricom roaming is billed per megabyte or by daily bundle and adds up fast. You also avoid surprise bills because you know the cost before you fly.

Do I need a UAE eSIM if my hotel has WiFi?

Yes, if you plan to leave the hotel. WiFi covers you inside the hotel; the moment you step out for the Metro, the Souk, dinner or a Careem ride you need mobile data. An eSIM is the cheapest way to have that data.

Does the eSIM cover all seven emirates?

Yes. Kwetu UAE plans work across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, on Etisalat and du.
