You can buy a travel eSIM and pay for it with M-PESA, in Kenyan shillings, without a credit card or a single dollar. That sentence sounds ordinary until you try to buy from a global eSIM app and hit a checkout that only takes an international card in US dollars. Kwetu is a Kenyan-owned travel eSIM built for that exact moment. Set KES as your account currency, pick the country you are travelling to, tap M-PESA at checkout, approve the STK Push on your phone, and the QR code arrives in your inbox seconds later.

Why paying with M-PESA is the whole point

Most travel eSIM sellers, including the big global names, need a foreign card at checkout and price everything in US dollars. For a lot of Kenyan and African travellers that is a real wall. Card ownership is lower than in Western markets, many Kenyan cards are blocked for international online payments by default and must be manually enabled through the bank app, and dollar pricing adds a currency-conversion sting on top of the plan cost. Plenty of people get all the way to the payment screen and simply cannot pay.

M-PESA removes every one of those obstacles. You pay in shillings, from the money you already have, with a one-tap STK Push prompt on your phone. No card details, no foreign-currency limit, no declined-transaction guessing game. It is the payment method you already trust for KPLC, Zuku, DStv, boda fares and rent, now buying your travel data.

How to buy a Kwetu eSIM with M-PESA, step by step

  1. Open the Kwetu app or website and pick your destination, for example Dubai, London, Guangzhou or Delhi.
  2. Set your account currency to KES. Sign in (or create an account), open account settings and switch currency to Kenyan shillings. This is what exposes the M-PESA option at checkout.
  3. Choose the data plan that fits your trip length and expected usage. For a week in a major city, 3 to 5GB is usually plenty.
  4. At checkout, select M-PESA. The price is shown in KES, converted from the USD list price at the live rate.
  5. Enter your Safaricom number. An STK Push prompt appears on your phone within 10 to 20 seconds.
  6. Confirm the merchant name (Kwetu or its aggregator short code) and the KES amount on the prompt.
  7. Enter your M-PESA PIN. Payment is instant. You get an M-PESA SMS confirmation with a reference code.
  8. Your eSIM QR code arrives by email within seconds. Install it while on home WiFi, before you fly.
  9. Land and connect. When your plane touches down, the Kwetu eSIM activates on the local network automatically.

Install before you fly, connect when you land

Buying is only half of it. Install the eSIM while you are still on home WiFi so everything is ready before departure. Open your phone settings, choose Add eSIM (or Add data plan) and scan the QR code Kwetu emails you. When you land at your destination the eSIM activates on the local network, and you keep your Safaricom number active alongside it for M-PESA and two-factor texts back home.

One important thing to be clear about

Paying for your eSIM with M-PESA is one thing. Using M-PESA over the eSIM abroad is another, and they are not the same. Your travel eSIM is data only. It does not carry your Kenyan number, so your M-PESA app keeps working through your normal Safaricom line and number, not through the eSIM. In practice you keep your Safaricom SIM in the phone for M-PESA and calls, and let the Kwetu eSIM handle cheap local data at your destination. Two profiles, one phone.

Where to use it next

The most common outbound destinations for Kenyan travellers, in order, are Dubai (see our eSIM for Kenyans going to Dubai guide), the UK, China, India and South Africa. Frequently asked

Can I really buy a travel eSIM with M-PESA?

Yes. Kwetu supports M-PESA STK Push at checkout, priced in Kenyan shillings, alongside card options. Set KES as your account currency in Kwetu settings and the M-PESA option appears on the checkout page.

Do I need a credit card to buy a Kwetu eSIM?

No. M-PESA is enough. That is the whole reason Kwetu exists as a Kenyan alternative to Airalo, Holafly and the other global apps that require a foreign card in USD at checkout.

Will my M-PESA still work when I travel abroad?

Yes, through your normal Safaricom number and SIM. M-PESA runs on the Safaricom line registered to your ID, not on the travel eSIM. Keep your Safaricom SIM in the phone and M-PESA works internationally the same way it does at home.

Is paying with M-PESA STK Push safe here?

You confirm with your own PIN on your own phone via STK Push, the same flow you use for any M-PESA payment. Never share your PIN, and only enter it on a prompt that appears immediately after you clicked checkout. If a prompt shows up unexpectedly, cancel it.

How much does Kwetu cost in shillings?

Prices are displayed in USD by default, converted to KES at checkout at the live exchange rate. A 7-day 1GB Kenya plan at $6.15 works out to roughly KES 800; a 30-day 5GB UAE plan at $13.50 is roughly KES 1,750. The exact KES figure is confirmed in the STK Push prompt before you enter your PIN.

What happens if the STK Push does not arrive?

Wait 60 seconds first (Safaricom SMS and STK Push routes can lag at peak). Then click Resend on the Kwetu checkout. If it still fails, check that the number you entered is a Safaricom line (M-PESA works only on Safaricom in Kenya) and that you have signal. As a last resort, log out and back in, or complete the purchase with a card.
