iTax
Also known as: iTax portal, KRA iTax, itax.kra.go.ke
Full definition
iTax is the Kenya Revenue Authority's online tax administration system, launched in 2013. It replaced the older paper-based and legacy KRA Online systems for direct-tax filing. Every registered taxpayer has an iTax login (KRA PIN plus password), and every tax filing (PAYE monthly, VAT monthly, corporate income tax, individual income tax annually, rental income tax, turnover tax) goes through iTax.
Core functions inside iTax: register or update a KRA PIN, file returns, generate a Payment Registration Number (PRN) that maps to a specific tax liability, download a Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) once returns and payments are up to date, submit tax objections and refunds, and view a taxpayer ledger.
Payments themselves happen outside iTax: the taxpayer generates a PRN on iTax, then pays via bank, M-PESA paybill 572572, Airtel Money, Equitel or debit card. The paybillke KRA guides walk through the PRN and paybill flow. iTax does not accept card or wallet payments inside the portal itself; the PRN is the anchor.
Worked example
An employer files January 2026 PAYE on iTax. iTax generates a PRN for the PAYE liability. The employer pays that PRN via M-PESA paybill 572572 with the PRN as the account number, and the tax ledger updates within an hour.
