Note: Online (web/app) send to M-PESA: flat fee + ~2.5% FX margin. Sending from a WU agent location with cash costs more (higher fee tier + 3-4% FX margin), so this calculator models the online path. For the live quote, the in-app rate at westernunion.com is authoritative. WU's structural edge is the physical agent network, which matters more for senders without bank accounts than for online price.

FX rates baked in are mid-market reference values as of June 2026 and shift daily. For the actual rate on your transfer date, the displayed quote in Western Union is authoritative. This calculator is for modelling expected cost, not a binding quote.

WU wins on the physical agent network (cash funding, Gulf corridors, recipients without bank accounts). For online sends from a bank account, Wise and Sendwave usually deliver more KES on the same source amount.

Where Western Union fits in 2026

Western Union is the oldest remittance brand in the market and the only one with a genuine physical agent footprint, including dense coverage in the Gulf, North America, and Europe. The trade-off is online price: WU's flat fee + ~2.5% FX margin on the web/app path is more expensive than Wise or Sendwave on most US, UK, and EU corridors. WU still wins in three specific cases.

When Western Union is the right choice

  • Sender wants to use cash: walk-in at a WU agent location, hand over cash, recipient sees M-PESA credit. No bank account needed on the sender side.
  • Gulf corridors: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar to Kenya. WU has dense agent networks across the GCC for blue-collar diaspora workers; Wise and Sendwave coverage is narrower here.
  • Recipient prefers cash pickup: WU's Kenyan cash-pickup network through local banks and post offices is broader than the digital-only competitors.

When Western Union is the wrong choice

  • Online bank-funded US/UK/EU sends: Wise or Sendwave will deliver materially more KES on the same source amount. The WU online price reflects the cost of operating the agent network you are not using.
  • Frequent recurring sends: the per-transaction fee structure compounds. Wise Business or Sendwave's recurring tools are cheaper at scale.
  • Large one-off transfers: WU's FX margin on $1,000+ sends adds up fast. Wise typically delivers KES 2,500 to 4,000 more on a $1,000 send.

The online versus agent gap

The calculator above models WU's online path because that's what an affiliate click delivers. If you are sending cash from a physical WU location, expect a higher fee tier (typically 2 to 3x the online flat fee) and a wider FX margin (3 to 4% above mid-market). The agent path is unavoidably more expensive in both fees and rate, but sometimes it's the only path available (no bank account, no smartphone, no card to fund the send).

What this calculator does not model

  • Promotional first-transfer FX bands that WU sometimes offers (often -0.5 to -1% off the normal margin).
  • WU's recipient choice between M-PESA wallet and bank deposit (both supported in Kenya at no extra recipient cost).
  • The standard M-PESA withdrawal fee at the agent (calculated separately, see our M-PESA fees calculator).
  • Currency conversions through a third currency (rare for KES; most corridors route direct).

Frequently asked

Are these Western Union fees accurate as of 2026?

The structure (flat online fee + ~2.5% FX margin for digital sends) is current. WU's exact flat fee varies by corridor and amount tier; westernunion.com's live quote on your specific send is authoritative. We refresh the reference figures quarterly.

Western Union vs Wise for Kenya, which is cheaper?

Wise is materially cheaper for online bank-funded sends, often delivering KES 2,000 to 4,000 more per $1,000. Western Union wins when the sender needs to fund with cash at an agent location, when the corridor is in the Gulf, or when the recipient wants cash pickup instead of M-PESA.

Does Western Union deliver to M-PESA directly?

Yes. M-PESA is a standard payout option for WU sends into Kenya. Delivery is typically within minutes after the sender funds the transfer. Cash pickup at WU partner agents and bank deposit are also available if the recipient prefers.

Why is Western Union more expensive online than Wise?

Western Union's online price covers the cost of operating the physical agent network. Even if you are not using an agent, the company's pricing supports the infrastructure. Wise has no agent network and passes the savings on to digital senders. If the agent network has no value to you, Wise is the better choice; if you ever need the agent network, WU has it.

Is Western Union safe?

Yes, for legitimate transfers. WU is one of the most regulated money transfer operators globally with anti-money-laundering controls that exceed minimums in most jurisdictions. Scam risk is on the user side: if a stranger asks you to send WU money for a deal, a job, or a romance contact, it is almost always a scam. Never WU strangers.

How much can I send through Western Union to Kenya?

WU limits vary by corridor, payment method, and account verification status. Typical limits: USD 1,000 to 5,000 per single online transfer, USD 15,000 to 50,000 per agent transfer, with documentation. For larger amounts, multiple sends across days or weeks are common. The recipient M-PESA wallet ceiling (KES 500,000 in 2026) may also limit a single delivery.
