How water billing works in Kenya

Water utilities in Kenya (Nairobi Water Company, Mombasa Water, Eldowas, Nyewasco, and similar county utilities) bill on a stepped tariff. The first few cubic metres are subsidised (lifeline tariff), with rates rising for higher consumption. Most utilities also add:

  • Sewer charge: typically 75% of the water charge for connected properties
  • Regulator levy: small percentage, around 5%
  • Meter rent: fixed monthly fee for the meter

Reducing your bill

  • Fix leaks promptly (a small drip can add 5 to 10 m³ per month)
  • Install low-flow shower heads and dual-flush toilets
  • Use rainwater for non-potable needs (gardening, cleaning)
  • Read your meter weekly to spot anomalies
  • Dispute high bills with photos of the meter on the read date

Frequently asked

Why is my water bill higher than this calculator shows?

County tariffs vary, your county may use different bands, sewer percentage, or levies. The calculator uses Nairobi Water-style bands as a baseline. For exact figures, see your bill.

How do I read my water meter?

Most domestic meters show a 5 or 6-digit reading in cubic metres. Take a photo monthly on the same date, subtract last month from this month, that is your consumption.

Why is sewer charge a percentage of water?

Sewer charges in Kenya are typically calculated as a percentage of water consumption (around 75%) on the assumption that most water consumed becomes wastewater. Properties without sewer connection pay only the water charge.
