How water billing works in Kenya
Water utilities in Kenya (Nairobi Water Company, Mombasa Water, Eldowas, Nyewasco, and similar county utilities) bill on a stepped tariff. The first few cubic metres are subsidised (lifeline tariff), with rates rising for higher consumption. Most utilities also add:
- Sewer charge: typically 75% of the water charge for connected properties
- Regulator levy: small percentage, around 5%
- Meter rent: fixed monthly fee for the meter
Reducing your bill
- Fix leaks promptly (a small drip can add 5 to 10 m³ per month)
- Install low-flow shower heads and dual-flush toilets
- Use rainwater for non-potable needs (gardening, cleaning)
- Read your meter weekly to spot anomalies
- Dispute high bills with photos of the meter on the read date
