How KPLC tariff works
Domestic Kenya Power postpaid tariff (DC) charges per kWh in three bands:
- Lifeline (0 to 30 kWh): lowest rate, around KES 12 per kWh
- Domestic (31 to 100 kWh): middle band, around KES 21 per kWh
- Domestic above 100 kWh: highest band, around KES 25 per kWh
On top of energy charges sit several variable monthly levies (fuel cost adjustment, forex adjustment, ERC inflation, REP levy, water levy), then 16% VAT on the subtotal. The variable levies move monthly, which is why bills fluctuate even when consumption does not.
Reducing your bill
- Switch to LED lighting
- Use solar water heater (legally required for new buildings drawing >100L/day)
- Off-peak appliance use where time-of-use is offered
- Confirm meter reading vs actual consumption monthly
- Report tampering or anomalous readings via *977# or KPLC app
Prepaid vs postpaid
Prepaid (token) is roughly the same per-kWh cost as postpaid but is paid upfront. The advantage is you cannot accumulate a large unpaid bill. Most new connections in Kenya default to prepaid. Postpaid is more common for long-standing accounts and businesses.
