WorldRemit to M-PESA: 4 delivery rails, minutes to M-PESA

WorldRemit is the multi-rail sibling to Sendwave (both owned by Zepz Group since 2020). Where Sendwave is M-PESA-only and leaner, WorldRemit adds bank deposit, cash pickup at 3,000+ Kenyan agents, and airtime top-up. Costs more per send, but the fallback rails matter for recipients without M-PESA or in remote areas.

4 delivery rails, pick per send

  • Mobile Money (M-PESA): Direct to Safaricom wallet. Minutes to land. Recipient does nothing.
  • Bank deposit: KCB, Equity, Co-op, NCBA, Absa, DTB, and others. 1-2 business days. Useful for property escrow or business.
  • Cash pickup: Over 3,000 agent locations across Kenya (Postbank, Family Bank branches). Recipient collects with ID.
  • Airtime top-up: Direct to a Safaricom, Airtel, or Telkom line. Small denominations only, useful for family SIM top-ups.

The 3-step send flow

  1. Step 1

    Sign up and add funding

Sign up on worldremit.com or the app. Complete identity verification. Add a US, UK, or Canadian debit card (cheapest), credit card (small surcharge), or bank account.

  2. Step 2

Add recipient and pick a rail

For M-PESA, enter the +254 Safaricom number. For bank, enter recipient bank + account. For cash pickup, enter recipient full name only. WorldRemit shows the fee and delivered KES per rail before you confirm.

  3. Step 3

    Confirm the send

Enter amount. Review fee, FX, delivered KES. Tap Send. M-PESA lands in minutes; bank deposit in 1-2 business days; cash pickup is ready immediately.

FAQ

How long does WorldRemit to M-PESA take?

Under a minute for M-PESA delivery once funding clears. First-time card verification adds a few hours. WorldRemit routes through M-PESA Global, same rails as Sendwave (both Zepz-owned).

What does WorldRemit cost right now?

From the US in July 2026: about $1.99-4.99 fee (tier-based on amount) plus 1-2% FX margin. On a $100 send that is roughly $3.50-4.50 all-in, delivering KES ~12,300 to M-PESA. More expensive than Sendwave for M-PESA-only but adds cash-pickup and bank-deposit rails.

Is WorldRemit the same company as Sendwave?

Same parent (Zepz Group), different products. Zepz merged WorldRemit and Sendwave in 2020 and kept them as separate consumer brands. Sendwave targets recurring small M-PESA senders; WorldRemit targets multi-rail senders who need cash pickup or bank deposit as fallback.

Which delivery rails does WorldRemit support in Kenya?

Four rails. (1) M-PESA mobile-wallet delivery, minutes. (2) Bank deposit to KCB, Equity, Co-op, NCBA, Absa. (3) Cash pickup at over 3,000 agent locations across Kenya (Postbank, Family Bank branches). (4) Airtime top-up direct to Safaricom line.

When is WorldRemit worth the extra cost vs Sendwave?

When the recipient does not use M-PESA (rare but happens with older parents), when you need cash pickup for a specific event, or when you send from a sending country Sendwave does not cover (150+ vs 40-ish).

Is WorldRemit safe?

Yes. FCA-regulated in the UK, FinCEN-registered in the US, Zepz group publishes annual accounts. Operating since 2010, mature dispute resolution.
