Which Kenyan supermarkets deliver, and how you pay

By Josephine Njeri · Kenyan supermarkets hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Kenyan supermarkets.

Every major chain now sells online. Naivas delivers same-day in Nairobi, Carrefour runs a 60 to 90 minute express service in parts of Nairobi, Mombasa and Diani, and Greenspoon offers a 45-minute window in parts of Nairobi. All take M-PESA; some also take cash or M-PESA on delivery, which is the useful bit if you do not want to pay before you see the order.

Pay now or pay on delivery

This is the distinction worth understanding before you choose a shop. Paying at checkout is normal and usually the only option. Paying on delivery means the money leaves when the groceries arrive, which protects you against substitutions and short deliveries in a category where both are common. Carrefour offers M-PESA on delivery for orders below KES 5,000, and Greenspoon takes cash on delivery.

Chain by chain

Naivas. Kenya’s largest chain, 106+ outlets. Shop at naivas.online or in the Naivas app, with same-day delivery in Nairobi. Naivas also sells through Jumia Food and Glovo, which is a different route with different fees.

Carrefour. Operated by Majid Al Futtaim. The Carrefour/MAF app takes M-PESA, cards, vouchers and MyCLUB loyalty points, with express delivery of 60 to 90 minutes in selected areas of Nairobi, Mombasa and Diani, and M-PESA on delivery under KES 5,000.

Quickmart. The second-largest chain. Order at quickmart.co.ke, delivered, paid by M-PESA.

Greenspoon. An online-first premium and organic grocer with essentially no shop tills. Takes M-PESA, card, or cash on delivery, with a 45-minute GreenspoonGo option in parts of Nairobi, same-day elsewhere in the city, and next-day upcountry by courier.

Cleanshelf, Chandarana Foodplus and Zucchini. All three run online storefronts at cleanshelf.online, foodplus.co.ke and zucchini.co.ke respectively, alongside their branch tills.

Aggregators are a different deal

Ordering the same shop through Jumia Food, Glovo or Uber Eats is not the same transaction as ordering on the chain’s own app. The aggregator sets its own delivery fee and service charge, its own substitution policy, and its own refund process, and the price of an item on the aggregator is not always the shelf price. If something goes wrong, your counterparty is the aggregator, not the supermarket.

Check the delivery area before you fill a basket

Express windows are advertised for selected areas, not whole cities, and the boundaries are not always where you would guess. Confirm your estate is covered on the app before you spend twenty minutes shopping, because the failure usually surfaces at checkout.

Which Kenyan supermarkets deliver?

Naivas, Carrefour, Quickmart, Greenspoon, Cleanshelf, Chandarana Foodplus and Zucchini all offer online ordering with delivery, mostly concentrated in Nairobi.

Can I pay for groceries on delivery?

Carrefour offers M-PESA on delivery for orders below KES 5,000 and Greenspoon takes cash on delivery. Most others want payment at checkout.

How fast is Carrefour express delivery?

About 60 to 90 minutes in selected areas of Nairobi, Mombasa and Diani. Confirm your area is covered in the app.

Is it cheaper to order on the chain app or on Glovo?

Usually the chain’s own app. Aggregators add their own delivery and service fees, and item prices are not always the shelf price.
