Supermarket loyalty in Kenya: what the points are actually worth

The useful distinction is whether points can be spent as payment or only redeemed against selected rewards. Carrefour’s MyCLUB points can be applied as payment inside the app, which makes them close to cash. Most other schemes are discount-and-offer programmes rather than a second currency.

The question to ask about any loyalty scheme

Not "how many points do I earn" but "what can I do with them, and when do they expire". A scheme that pays a high rate into points you can only spend on a narrow range of items, or that expires them quietly after a year, is worth less than a lower rate you can put straight against your shopping. Ask both questions before you let a scheme influence where you shop.

What each chain runs

Carrefour MyCLUB. Points accrue on purchases and can be redeemed as payment in the Carrefour app, alongside M-PESA, cards and vouchers. Carrefour also issues vouchers that are accepted by some partners outside its own stores, including EvoPay for parking.

Naivas loyalty card. A card-based scheme run across the Naivas estate.

Quickmart loyalty. Quickmart runs its own programme across its branches.

Loyalty points and M-PESA are not interchangeable

One practical note for the Carrefour app in particular: paying partly in points and partly by M-PESA is normal, and the M-PESA leg is charged as a normal Buy Goods or in-app payment. Points reduce what you owe; they do not change how the remainder is charged.
