M-PESA limits stable: KES 500K wallet, 250K single transaction, 500K daily since 2022

The CBK directive of October 2022 raised the M-PESA wallet ceiling from KES 300,000 to KES 500,000, the single-transaction cap stayed at KES 250,000, and the daily ceiling moved to KES 500,000. As of June 2026 these limits remain unchanged.

What changed

  • Wallet ceiling: KES 500,000 (raised from KES 300,000 in October 2022).
  • Single transaction cap: KES 250,000 (unchanged since 2018).
  • Daily transaction ceiling: KES 500,000 cumulative across all transaction types.
  • Send minimum to a registered M-PESA: KES 1.
  • Paybill system minimum: KES 5 (individual operators set their own higher floors).
  • Reversal window: 7 days via *456# (or forward the SMS to 456) (unchanged).

Why it matters

Most Kenyans never approach the upper limits, but the ceilings matter for paybill operators settling large contracts, school fee payments, and business-to-business transfers. The daily ceiling caught a lot of employers off-guard during the NSSF deduction debacle in 2024 when batch salary settlements exceeded the cap; the workaround for high-volume use is M-PESA Business or bank-to-bank wires for amounts above the standard tier.

What to do

  • If you regularly transact above KES 100,000 per day, consider M-PESA Business for higher per-account tiers.
  • For one-off large payments above KES 250,000, split into multiple transactions on the same day (subject to the KES 500,000 daily ceiling).
  • For amounts above KES 500,000, use a bank wire or PesaLink instead of M-PESA.
  • Industry rumour about a raise to KES 1 million wallet ceiling has not materialised as of June 2026; we update this entry within 48 hours of any CBK announcement.
