How to pay DStv or GOtv straight from your bank

By Michael Mwangi · MultiChoice Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with MultiChoice Kenya.

Every major Kenyan bank can pay DStv and GOtv directly from your account, which skips the bank-to-M-PESA transfer fee entirely. Co-op *667#, Equity *247#, KCB *522# and Absa *224# all have a pay-TV path, and DTB, I&M and Rafiki do it through their apps.

Why this is usually cheaper than M-PESA

The common habit is to pull money from the bank into M-PESA and then pay the paybill from there. That is two transactions. Moving money out of a bank account to an M-PESA wallet is where Kenyan banks charge most, up to KES 65 a pull at some of them, and then the paybill has its own tariff. Paying the biller directly from the bank is one transaction and normally the cheaper of the two routes. The exception is if your bank is one of the few that zero-rate the transfer out, in which case the difference narrows to almost nothing.

Co-operative Bank, on *667#

  1. Dial *667# and log in.
  2. Choose 3, Payments, then Utility Bills, then Pay TV.
  3. Choose 1 for DStv or 2 for GOtv, then Pay Bill.
  4. Enter the smartcard or IUC number and wait for the validated name to come back. Check it before you go on.
  5. Choose the account to pay from, enter the amount, confirm.

Equity Bank, on *247#

  1. Dial *247#.
  2. Choose Pay Bill, then enter business number.
  3. Enter 423655 for GOtv, or 444900 for DStv.
  4. Enter your IUC or smartcard number as the account, then the amount.
  5. Pick the account to debit and confirm with your mobile banking PIN.

KCB and Absa

KCB, on *522#: choose Bill Payments, then Pay Bill, then pick DSTV or GOTV from the biller list and enter your customer number. The KCB app does the same under Transact, Pay Bill, Other Billers. You can also pay at any KCB agent.

Absa, on *224#: enter your mobile banking PIN, choose 5, Bank services, then 2, Pay bills, then 2, Make a one-time payment, then find the biller. You may need to enter ## to page through the biller list before DStv appears. Then the smartcard number, the amount, and the account to pay from.

DTB, I&M and Rafiki, through the app

These three do it the same way and MultiChoice documents the flow identically for each: open mobile banking, choose Pay Utilities, choose DStv or GOtv, pick the product identifier (smartcard or customer number), enter it, enter the amount, choose the account to debit, enter your PIN and pay.

A word on MultiChoice’s own bank list

If you go looking at the payment pages on dstv.com and gotvafrica.com, be ready for some archaeology. They still list Barclays, which became Absa in Kenya in 2020. They list CBA and NIC separately, and those two merged into NCBA in 2019. They list Jamii Bora, now Kingdom Bank. The steps under those headings are still broadly right, because the underlying biller integrations did not change when the signage did, but the names will not match the app on your phone. We have used current names above, and we only print a USSD code here if we have dialled it.

Frequently asked

Can I pay DStv without M-PESA?

Yes. Co-op *667#, Equity *247#, KCB *522# and Absa *224# all pay DStv directly from a bank account, as do the DTB, I&M and Rafiki apps.

Is paying from the bank cheaper?

Usually. It is one transaction instead of two, and it skips the bank-to-M-PESA pull, which is the expensive leg at most banks.

What is the Co-op Bank path for DStv?

Dial *667#, then Payments, Utility Bills, Pay TV, then option 1 for DStv or 2 for GOtv.

Why does DStv’s website still say Barclays?

Their Kenyan payment pages have not been renamed since the Absa rebrand. The steps still work; the logo is just out of date.

Can I pay at a bank branch?

Yes, and at KCB agents. MultiChoice also runs seven walk-in branches of its own in Kenya.
