When you send money to the wrong number or paybill, the first move is to request a reversal (forward the M-PESA SMS to 456, or dial the reversal flow, or call 100). But a reversal is a request, not a switch. It can fail, and understanding why tells you what to do next.
Why a reversal fails
There are three common reasons the automatic reversal does not go through.
- The money is already gone. M-PESA can only claw back funds still sitting in the recipient's wallet. If they have withdrawn the cash at an agent, sent it on, or spent it, there is nothing left to reverse.
- The recipient refuses to release it. For a completed reversal, the system asks the recipient to confirm. If they decline, or simply do not respond, the automatic process stalls.
- The window closed. Reversals are time-sensitive. Raise it within the same day for the best chance, and within 7 days at the outside.
What "failed" actually means
The escalation path
- Call Safaricom on 100 (free from a Safaricom line) and open a formal dispute with your M-PESA transaction code, the amount, and the wrong recipient number. Ask for a reference.
- Keep every SMS. The transaction code is your evidence. Do not delete anything.
- If it is a scam or a large amount, report to the police and get an OB (Occurrence Book) number. Safaricom can act on a fraudulent recipient once there is a police report, including freezing the line in genuine fraud cases.
- Follow up with the reference. Disputes are worked case by case and can take time. Chase the reference number rather than raising a new request each time.
What you cannot do
You cannot force a stranger to hand the money back, and no "M-PESA agent" who contacts you asking for a fee to reverse a transaction is real. Safaricom never charges you to process a reversal. Anyone who does is running a second scam on top of the first.
Prevent the next one
Use Hakikisha, the confirmation step that shows the recipient's name before you send, and check that name matches who you meant to pay. For paybills, confirm the recipient name on the M-PESA SMS matches the business. A two-second check beats a failed reversal.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when an M-PESA reversal fails?
It means the automatic reversal could not pull the money back, usually because the recipient already withdrew or spent it, or refused to release it. You then escalate through Safaricom's dispute process on 100, and the police if it is fraud.
Can I get my money back after a failed M-PESA reversal?
Sometimes. Open a formal dispute with Safaricom on 100 using your transaction code, and report to the police for a large amount or fraud. It becomes a recovery case rather than an automatic reversal.
Does Safaricom charge to reverse an M-PESA transaction?
No. Safaricom never charges you to process a reversal. Anyone asking for a fee to reverse a transaction is running a scam.
How long do I have to reverse an M-PESA payment?
Raise it the same day for the best chance, and within 7 days at the outside. The sooner you act, the more likely the money is still in the recipient's wallet.
