Safaricom Postpaid uses M-PESA paybill 200200, with your registered postpaid phone number as the account. The most common Safaricom paybill issues are not actual payment failures: they are confusion between Postpaid, Home Fibre, and prepaid airtime; the 24-hour bill update lag; and the data bundle activation flow that does not do what people expect. This guide covers the right paybill for each Safaricom product, the bill update timing, the bundle activation gotcha, the scam paybills targeting Safaricom customers, and the escalation path.

Which Safaricom paybill do I use?

  • Safaricom Postpaid (monthly bill): paybill 200200, account = your postpaid phone number (e.g. 254712345678).
  • Safaricom Home Fibre: paybill 150501, account = your Home Fibre account number from your invoice or the OneApp.
  • Safaricom prepaid airtime: not a paybill. Use the M-PESA Buy Airtime menu, or dial *234# and choose Buy Airtime.
  • Safaricom prepaid data bundles: not a paybill for instant activation. Use *544# from your line, or the OneApp / M-PESA app Buy Bundles flow.
  • Safaricom Business: separate routing; check your invoice for the paybill or use the Safaricom Business portal.

Three checks before you call

  1. Did the M-PESA SMS arrive with a 10-character code? If yes, the payment is accepted. If no SMS after 5 minutes, the payment failed and your wallet was not debited.
  2. Does the SMS recipient name read SAFARICOM POSTPAID? That is the legitimate recipient of paybill 200200. If the SMS shows any other name, you paid the wrong paybill.
  3. Is the phone number in the SMS the right postpaid line? Easy to type a friend or family member's line by mistake. The bill on that line gets credited; yours does not.

Postpaid bill update lag

Safaricom Postpaid bills update within 24 hours of M-PESA payment, often within 2 to 4 hours during business hours. The lag is on the Safaricom billing system, not on M-PESA. Your line stays active throughout, provided you paid before the due date.

If the bill still shows unpaid after 24 hours:

  1. Dial *544# on your Safaricom line for current postpaid balance.
  2. Check the OneApp or M-PESA app for the latest bill status.
  3. If still unchanged, call 100 from your Safaricom line (or 0722 002 100 from any other line) with the M-PESA transaction code.

Data bundle activation: the OneApp vs paybill confusion

Paybill 200200 credits your postpaid balance, which is used to settle your next monthly bill. It does not instantly activate a data bundle. People often pay 200200 expecting to get an immediate data top-up; the money sits on the postpaid account until the bill cycle runs.

For instant data bundle activation:

  • From the M-PESA menu: choose Buy Bundles, select the bundle size, pay from M-PESA. Activates within seconds.
  • Dial *544#: from the line you want the bundle on. Choose Data Bundles, pick the size, confirm. Same flow, often faster.
  • Safaricom OneApp: in the app, tap Bundles, choose the size, pay via M-PESA STK push.

The most common failure mode after the basics. Run this:

  1. Re-check the M-PESA SMS recipient. Should read SAFARICOM POSTPAID. If not, you paid the wrong paybill, reverse and retry with 200200.
  2. Verify the phone number on the SMS is the postpaid line you intended to pay for. Multi-line households sometimes mix lines.
  3. Confirm the line type. If the phone number in the SMS is actually prepaid, the credit landed in a holding account. Call 100 to re-route as airtime, or reverse via *456# (or forward the confirmation SMS to 456).
  4. Dial *544# to check the latest postpaid balance directly from the line in question.
  5. If still unresolved after 24 hours, call 100 from your Safaricom line with the M-PESA transaction code. Safaricom can verify and post within minutes.

Line suspended for non-payment after a paybill payment

If your line was suspended for non-payment and you have now paid 200200, reactivation usually happens within 10 to 30 minutes of the M-PESA SMS, provided:

  • You paid the full outstanding amount, not a partial payment.
  • The phone number on the M-PESA payment matches the suspended line.
  • The line is not flagged for any non-payment issue beyond the bill (e.g., compliance hold).

If reactivation takes longer than 30 minutes after a full payment, call 100 from another Safaricom line or 0722 002 100 from any line with your M-PESA transaction code.

Scam paybills targeting Safaricom customers

Variants of 200200 circulating via SMS and WhatsApp:

  • 200201, 200202: trailing-digit, not Safaricom
  • 200020, 220020: digits reordered
  • "Safaricom paybill update: XXXXXX" SMS: always fake. Safaricom has not changed 200200 in years.

Confirm 200200 on safaricom.co.ke or our Safaricom Postpaid paybill page before paying any number you have not used before. If the SMS recipient is not SAFARICOM POSTPAID, reverse within 7 days.

Reversing a wrong Safaricom paybill payment

Because Safaricom is the M-PESA operator, reversals of Safaricom-routed payments are usually faster than reversals to third parties: often resolved the same day.

  1. Forward the M-PESA confirmation SMS to 456, or dial *456# from your Safaricom line and choose Reversal.
  2. Key in the M-PESA transaction code.
  3. Confirm.
  4. Resolution typically same-day, sometimes within minutes.

If your account has already consumed the credited amount (e.g., the bill ran and the credit was applied), the reversal may be declined.

How to escalate to Safaricom

  • From any other line: dial 0722 002 100
  • USSD self-service: *544# (postpaid balance, data bundles, voice bundles), *234# (M-PESA self-service, PIN reset, Fuliza), *456# (M-PESA reversal)
  • OneApp: in-app live chat support, fastest for billing issues
  • Twitter: @Safaricom_Care (replies within minutes during business hours)
  • Email: customercare@safaricom.co.ke
  • Walk-in: Safaricom Care centre at any Safaricom shop, ID required

FAQ

What is the official Safaricom Postpaid paybill in Kenya?

The official Safaricom Postpaid paybill is 200200, with your registered Safaricom phone number as the account. Use this for monthly postpaid bills, Safaricom Home Fibre uses a separate paybill (150501), and Safaricom Business has its own routing. Verify on safaricom.co.ke or our Safaricom Postpaid paybill page.

I paid 200200 but my Safaricom bill still shows unpaid. What now?

Postpaid bill updates take up to 24 hours after the M-PESA payment, even though the payment goes through immediately. The M-PESA SMS is your proof. Check the bill via the M-PESA app, the Safaricom OneApp, or dial *544# for postpaid balance. If after 24 hours the bill still shows unpaid, call 100 from your Safaricom line with the M-PESA transaction code.

What account number do I use when paying Safaricom Postpaid via M-PESA?

Your registered Safaricom phone number, in the format 254712345678 or 0712345678. No spaces, no hyphens, no country code prefix variations. The phone number must be the one your postpaid plan is registered under, not a friend or family line on the same plan.

Can I pay someone else's Safaricom Postpaid bill from my M-PESA?

Yes. Use paybill 200200 with their phone number as the account. The payment credits their postpaid account, not yours. Useful for paying a family member or employee bill remotely. The bill update timing is the same: up to 24 hours to reflect.

I paid 200200 but I am being told my line is suspended for non-payment. Why?

Two possibilities. (1) You paid less than the outstanding amount, partial payments do not lift the suspension; you have to clear the full outstanding before service resumes. (2) The suspension was triggered before your payment, and the system has not auto-reactivated yet. Call 100 from another Safaricom line (since your suspended one cannot dial 100), or use *544# to confirm balance and request reactivation. Reactivation typically takes 10 to 30 minutes after full payment.

I paid for a data bundle via 200200 but the bundle has not activated. What now?

Data bundles bought through 200200 paybill are tied to the bill cycle, not instantly activated. For instant bundle activation, use the M-PESA Buy Bundles flow inside the M-PESA menu, or dial *544# from your line. Bundles purchased that way activate within seconds. If you paid 200200 expecting instant activation, the amount credits to your postpaid balance and will be applied when the next bill cycle runs.

My Safaricom paybill SMS says "Recipient not found". What does it mean?

Either you typed 200200 wrong, or the phone number you used as the account is not on a postpaid plan (it might be prepaid, in which case you should use Buy Airtime instead). Verify both the paybill and the destination phone number, retry. If 200200 still fails, Safaricom may be experiencing a temporary outage; tweet @Safaricom_Care for status.

How long does Safaricom take to update a postpaid bill after M-PESA payment?

Up to 24 hours during business hours, up to 48 hours over weekends and public holidays. The M-PESA payment itself is instant; the postpaid billing system reconciles in batches. The line stays active throughout this window provided you paid before the due date.

Can I reverse a wrong Safaricom paybill payment?

Yes within 7 days. Forward the M-PESA confirmation SMS to 456, or dial *456# from your Safaricom line and choose Reversal, then key in the M-PESA transaction code. Since Safaricom is the operator, reversal of a Safaricom-routed payment is usually faster than reversals to third parties: same-day in most cases. Note that if your account has already consumed the credited amount, the reversal may be declined.

My phone shows the data bundle is active but no internet. Is this a payment problem?

Not directly. If *544# confirms the bundle is active, the payment side is fine. Common causes of "active bundle but no data": (1) APN settings not configured, (2) data roaming on while abroad, charging out of bundle, (3) bundle is for SMS or voice only, not data, (4) phone in airplane mode or mobile data toggled off, (5) Safaricom network outage in your area. Toggle mobile data off and on; if no fix, call 100.
