How to opt out of Fuliza (2026): the *334# steps and what to know first

If you would rather M-PESA simply declined a payment than quietly overdraw you, opt out of Fuliza. It takes a short menu, but you have to clear any balance first.

Fuliza is the M-PESA overdraft that quietly tops up a payment when your balance is short, and charges a daily fee until you repay. Handy in a pinch, but if you would rather M-PESA just declined the transaction than let you overdraw, you can switch it off.

Opt out on *334#

  1. Dial *334#.
  2. Choose Loans and Savings.
  3. Choose Fuliza, then Opt Out.
  4. Confirm with your M-PESA PIN.

The suspension takes effect within 24 hours.

The one condition

What changes after you opt out

Once the opt-out is active, Fuliza no longer covers shortfalls. A payment that exceeds your balance is simply declined, the way it would be without an overdraft. This is the point for people who found themselves fulizaing several times a month and paying the daily fees over and over.

Opting back in

You can opt back in through the same *334# menu at any time. There is no penalty for switching off and on, and your Fuliza limit is recalculated by Safaricom from your usage, not reset to zero by an opt-out.

If the habit is the problem

Many people trigger Fuliza on Monday, get auto-repaid on Friday's pay, and are short again by the next Monday. The daily fees add up to real money over a month. If that pattern sounds familiar, opting out forces the underlying budget question. Our Budget Planner can help you find the leak.
