The verified paybill for tokens
KPLC prepaid tokens use paybill 888880. The account is your 11-digit prepaid meter number, which is printed on the meter body itself, not on any bill (prepaid customers do not get a monthly bill). The postpaid bill paybill, 888888, is a different book entirely. Both are locked and almost never change.
Buy a token step by step
- Open the M-PESA app, or dial *334#.
- Select Lipa na M-PESA, then Pay Bill.
- Business number: 888880.
- Account: your 11-digit prepaid meter number (read it off the meter).
- Amount: anything from KES 50 upward.
- Enter your M-PESA PIN and confirm.
You receive two SMS messages. The first is the normal M-PESA confirmation with a transaction code. The second is a separate KPLC message carrying the 20-digit token. Type that token into your meter to load the units.
The token SMS did not arrive
This happens occasionally, usually at month-end peaks. The units are not lost. Your M-PESA transaction code is proof the money moved.
What tokens cost
Token purchases carry the standard M-PESA paybill fee, with the 15 percent excise bundled into the fee band. There is no KPLC surcharge on top. Small top-ups are cheap in absolute terms but proportionally pricier, so a single KES 1,000 token costs less in fees than five KES 200 tokens across a month.

The 888888 mix-up
The single most common KPLC error is buying tokens through 888888 (the postpaid bill paybill) instead of 888880. The money reaches KPLC, but it lands in the postpaid book and no token is generated. The fix is a phone call, not a reversal.
- Call KPLC on 97771 with your M-PESA transaction code and your prepaid meter number.
- KPLC moves the payment from the postpaid book to your prepaid meter, then issues the token. This takes 24 to 48 hours.
- Do not pay again in the meantime.
Invalid token on the meter
If the meter rejects the 20-digit token as invalid, the usual cause is that the token was generated for a different meter number than the one in front of you (a digit was off when you paid). Call KPLC on 97771 within 24 hours with the transaction code, and they can re-issue against the correct meter.
