Visit SendvaluChipper Cash is a pan-African fintech app founded by Ham Serunjogi (Ugandan) and Maijid Moujaled in 2018. Headquartered in San Francisco with operations across Africa. Originally focused on peer-to-peer transfers across African countries (intra-African corridor), now expanded to diaspora-sender corridors from the US, UK, and EU. Direct M-PESA integration in Kenya.
Two main use cases. (1) Intra-African: Chipper user in Uganda or Ghana or Nigeria sends to Chipper user or M-PESA wallet in Kenya, usually within minutes at low cost. (2) Diaspora: US or UK Chipper user sends to a Kenyan recipient (M-PESA, bank, or another Chipper user). Sender funds via bank or card, recipient receives via M-PESA or app wallet.
Intra-African transfers between Chipper users are often fee-free. Diaspora sends typically charge 0 to 2 percent fee plus 1 to 2 percent FX margin. Card funding adds 2 to 3 percent. The app shows full cost before confirming.
For US-Kenya or UK-Kenya diaspora sends, Wise is usually cheaper and faster. Chipper Cash wins when (a) both sender and recipient are Chipper users, or (b) the corridor is intra-African (e.g., Uganda-Kenya, Nigeria-Kenya) where Wise has weaker presence.
M-PESA cross-network (Vodacom Tanzania to Safaricom Kenya) is the most efficient intra-African M-PESA-to-M-PESA route. Chipper extends this to non-M-PESA African mobile money networks (MTN, Airtel Money in countries outside Kenya). For Kenya-Tanzania specifically, M-PESA cross-network beats Chipper. For Kenya-Nigeria or Kenya-Ghana, Chipper is often the better path.
Yes. Licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya, FinCEN-registered in the US, FCA-authorised in the UK. Backed by SVB Capital, Bezos Expeditions, Sam Altman, Brian Armstrong (Coinbase CEO), and others. Funds in transit safeguarded under applicable regulations.
Intra-Africa: Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, Tanzania (M-PESA cross-network). Diaspora: US (USD), UK (GBP), parts of EU (EUR). Africa-to-US/UK diaspora is the fastest-growing segment.
Chipper Cash previously supported crypto trading but scaled back the offering in 2024. As of mid-2026, Chipper is primarily a payments app rather than a crypto exchange. Confirm the current feature set in the app before relying on it for crypto.
