2026 Kenya salon / barber economics
- Barbers: average service KES 200-400 (haircut + edge + massage). Daily 10-25 services.
- Mid-tier salon: average ticket KES 500-1,500 (cut, braids, treatment). Daily 8-15 services.
- Premium salon (Westlands, Karen): average ticket KES 1,500-5,000. Daily 6-12 services.
- Product cost per service: KES 25-60 (oils, gels, blades, shampoo allocation).
The chair-rental model
Many Kenyan salons rent chairs to independent stylists at KES 8-15k/month per chair. That's a great fixed-revenue model, the salon owner doesn't carry stylist risk. But take-home is lower than running a fully-staffed salon at full capacity.
What kills profit
- Rent overshoot: don't take a Westlands rent in a Kasarani neighborhood. Match rent to local-area average ticket.
- Stylist turnover: a great stylist taking their loyal customers across the street is the #1 risk. Lock with formal employment contracts and chair-share equity.
- Walk-ins only: appointment booking via M-Pesa-Buy-Goods deposit smooths your day and pre-fills slow hours.
