Nairobi to Mombasa costs KSh 1,500 in Economy, KSh 4,500 in First Class and KSh 12,000 in Premium one way, with a Premium return at KSh 20,000. Short hops on the Nairobi–Suswa line start at KSh 70. Children under 3 travel free, 3 to 11 pay half.

Where these numbers come from

Every figure on this page is read off the Kenya Railways Madaraka Express Passenger Service Fares sheet published on krc.co.ke, cross-checked against the fare answers in the metickets.krc.co.ke FAQ. Where the two agree, which is everywhere we checked, the figure is stated plainly. Fares change; the sheet is the thing to re-check, not this page.

The children's rule, stated exactly

Kenya Railways splits it three ways, and the boundaries are strict:

  • Under 3 years: free, provided the child does not need a seat of their own. If a seat is needed, or there is more than one child, the minor fare applies.
  • 3 to 11 years: half the adult fare. You may be asked for the birth certificate.
  • 12 years and over: full adult fare, no exceptions.

A birth certificate is on the accepted-ID list for under-12s, which is the other reason to carry it.

What Premium actually buys

Premium Class runs between Nairobi and Mombasa with fully reclining, rotating seats, meals, a selection of entertainment, baby changing areas and Wi-Fi. It is also the only class you can reschedule or cancel online at metickets.krc.co.ke instead of queueing at a station, which is worth something on its own if your plans move.
