Nairobi to Mombasa costs KSh 1,500 in Economy, KSh 4,500 in First Class and KSh 12,000 in Premium one way, with a Premium return at KSh 20,000. Short hops on the Nairobi–Suswa line start at KSh 70. Children under 3 travel free, 3 to 11 pay half.

The children's rule, stated exactly
Kenya Railways splits it three ways, and the boundaries are strict:
- Under 3 years: free, provided the child does not need a seat of their own. If a seat is needed, or there is more than one child, the minor fare applies.
- 3 to 11 years: half the adult fare. You may be asked for the birth certificate.
- 12 years and over: full adult fare, no exceptions.
A birth certificate is on the accepted-ID list for under-12s, which is the other reason to carry it.
