Skrill is a Paysafe-owned e-wallet popular for online gambling, gaming-platform withdrawals, and trading-platform deposits. For Kenyan users, Skrill has historically been the default route for cashing out online-betting balances and for receiving funds from international employers in the gambling and gaming sectors. Direct delivery to M-PESA is supported, but the cost is meaningfully higher than dedicated remittance providers.

Gambling is for adults aged 18+ only.

When Skrill makes sense

The honest case for Skrill to M-PESA:

  • Funds already in Skrill balance. If you have an existing Skrill balance from a betting withdrawal or an international payment, cashing out directly to M-PESA via Skrill saves the conversion step.
  • Recipient does not have a bank account. Skrill delivers to M-PESA without a Kenyan bank account on the receiving end.
  • Sender does not have Wise or another cross-border app. Setting up Wise takes 5 to 10 minutes; if the urgency does not allow that, Skrill is a one-step path.

Path 1: Skrill direct to M-PESA

  1. Log in to Skrill (web or app).
  2. Click Send Money or Withdraw.
  3. Choose M-PESA Kenya as the delivery method.
  4. Enter the recipient\'s Safaricom M-PESA number.
  5. Enter the amount.
  6. Confirm; funds reach M-PESA within minutes.

All-in cost: 4 to 7 percent. Skrill\'s flat fee is around USD 1.45 to USD 4.99 depending on amount; the FX margin is around 3.5 to 4 percent above mid-market.

Time: Minutes.

Path 2: Skrill -> bank -> Wise -> M-PESA (cheaper)

For amounts above USD 100 where speed is not critical, withdrawing Skrill to your bank first then sending via Wise saves materially on FX:

  1. In Skrill, withdraw to your linked US, UK, or EU bank account.
  2. Wait for the bank credit (usually 1 to 3 business days; faster on Faster Payments in UK).
  3. From your bank, send to M-PESA via Wise (mid-market FX, around 0.5 to 1 percent total cost).

All-in cost: 1 to 3 percent. Skrill withdrawal fee is around 1.45 USD; Wise leg is 0.5 to 1 percent.

Time: 1 to 4 business days end to end.

Path 3: Skrill prepaid card on Sendwave or LemFi

If you have the Skrill Visa prepaid card, you can use it directly as a funding method on most remittance apps. This skips the bank-account step.

  1. Open Sendwave or LemFi.
  2. Set up a transfer to a Kenyan M-PESA number.
  3. Fund with your Skrill Visa prepaid card details.
  4. Funds reach M-PESA within minutes.

All-in cost: 2 to 4 percent (Sendwave\'s 1.5 percent margin plus card-funding premium).

Amount limits

  • Skrill direct M-PESA delivery: usually USD 2,500 per transaction (verified accounts).
  • Skrill withdrawal to bank: typically USD 10,000 per transaction (verified accounts).
  • Skrill prepaid card daily limit: USD 3,000 (varies by tier).
  • Wise card-funding from Skrill prepaid: USD 2,000 per transaction.

Tax note: gambling and trading withdrawals

If your Skrill balance is from gambling winnings (online betting), Kenya does not currently charge withholding tax on winnings, but does charge 5 percent excise on the deposit and 5 percent excise on withdrawal (Finance Act 2025). If the Skrill balance is from international employment, you may have KRA income tax obligations on receipt. Consult a tax advisor for amounts above USD 5,000 per month.

Bottom line

Skrill direct to M-PESA is the most convenient path but costs 4 to 7 percent all-in. For amounts above USD 100 where speed is not critical, Skrill to bank to Wise drops the cost to 1 to 3 percent at the cost of a 1 to 4 day delay. For mid-priority small sends, the Skrill prepaid card on Sendwave hits a middle ground at 2 to 4 percent.
