Top up a Rubis card on M-PESA paybill 485111, using your card serial number (it begins 65000) as the account. You can also top up at any Rubis station, or by RTGS and EFT for business accounts.

What a fuel card is actually for

A prepaid fuel card separates the person filling the tank from the person paying for it. For a household that is a modest convenience. For anyone running vehicles, it is the whole point: drivers fuel without carrying cash or a company phone, spend is capped in advance, and every litre lands on one statement instead of a shoebox of receipts. That is why fuel cards are a fleet product that households occasionally borrow, rather than the reverse.

Topping up the Rubis card

  1. Find your card serial number. It is printed on the card and begins 65000.
  2. Open M-PESA, choose Lipa na M-PESA, then Pay Bill.
  3. Business number: 485111.
  4. Account number: your card serial, digits only.
  5. Enter the amount, your PIN, and confirm. Keep the transaction code.

The other top-up routes

You can load a Rubis card at any Rubis station countrywide, and business accounts can load by RTGS or EFT with instructions sent to Rubis. Rubis also runs a mini app inside the M-PESA app for card services, which is the same rail with a friendlier front end. Shell and OLA run their own card programmes on the same principle.

A note on what 485111 is not

You will find 485111 published elsewhere as a cooking gas paybill. It is not. The account it asks for is a fuel-card serial number, which only identifies a card, and a cylinder of gas has no card serial. If you want cooking gas, see the gas page rather than paying this number and hoping.
