What Is Cellulant?
By David Wachira · Cellulant hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Cellulant.
Cellulant is one of Africa's largest payments companies, founded in 2003 at the start of the continent's mobile technology boom. It builds the infrastructure that lets businesses collect and pay out money across Africa from a single connection, spanning mobile money, banks and cards.
What it does
Cellulant gives a business one access point to many countries, licences and partnerships, so it can collect payments online and offline, disburse funds across borders, and send transactional alerts. It processes over 4.5 million transactions a day and operates across roughly 35 African countries, connecting hundreds of payment methods, a figure the company puts at over 370, including M-PESA, Airtel Money, MTN MoMo and Orange Money, plus card switches like Visa, Mastercard, NIBSS and Verve.
Tingg, the product
Most people meet Cellulant through Tingg, its payments platform for businesses, where merchants set up checkouts, links, pages, in-store payments and payouts. The simple way to hold it: Cellulant is the company and the rails, Tingg is the platform businesses sign up to use.
Why it exists
Africa holds most of the world's mobile money market while card penetration is low, and payments are fragmented across many operators and banks. Cellulant's answer is one platform that connects to all of them, so a business integrates once and reaches the whole network.
