What qualifies for insurance relief

  • Life insurance policies on the taxpayer, spouse, or dependent children
  • Education policies maturing for a dependent child
  • Health insurance policies for the taxpayer or family

Multiple policies are allowed. Sum the premiums and apply the 15% relief, capped at KES 5,000 monthly.

How to claim

  1. Obtain a relief certificate from your insurance provider showing the annual premium
  2. Submit it to your employer\'s payroll team for monthly relief application
  3. Or claim via your annual income tax return on iTax

How much do you actually save?

If your premium is KES 33,333 per month (which gives the maximum relief), your annual relief is KES 60,000. That is a direct reduction in PAYE. If you are in the 30% PAYE band on that income, the relief saves you the full KES 60,000 in tax annually.

Below KES 33,333 monthly premium, you are not at the cap. The relief is 15% of your actual premium.

Frequently asked

Does this work for SHIF / NHIF?

No. SHIF / NHIF contributions are mandatory statutory deductions, not insurance premiums. They are deductible from gross before PAYE (a different mechanism, more powerful in tax-saving terms).

Can I claim relief on my children's education policy?

Yes, if the policy matures within 10 years and is for the named dependent child's education. Confirm with your insurer that the policy qualifies.

Do I lose the relief if I leave the job mid-year?

No. The relief is annual and applied through your tax return. Even if your employer stops applying it monthly, you can claim it via iTax at year end.
